Can your birth chart show your investment style and philosophy?  Dissecting the charts of two of the world’s best investor/trader.

Warren Buffett, also known as the “Oracle of Omaha”, is widely regarded as one of the most successful investors of all time.  Over his career, his investment returns average 20% a year, allowing him to amass an enormous wealth of over US$100 billion, which makes him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world.  Buffett is most known for his “value investing” style where he focuses on investing in companies with strong fundamentals that are priced in what he would identify as “value” zone, or put in laymen terms, when they’re cheap.  His holding horizon is famously known to be “forever”, something that sounds like it is easy to execute but in actuality very difficult.

While writing this blog, I discovered that George Soros, another very famous “investor” known though for his aggressive style is born only 18 days before Buffett, in another part of the world (Austria!).

It is interesting when you have two highly successful people in a similar field born so close to each other yet have such different investment philosophies.  Their birth charts can’t be more explicit in identifying their differences.

Both Buffett and Soros has the aspect Jupiter Pluto conjunction, which is not uncommon for bankers, financiers, investors to have as literally this is the aspect of “big money” or big power.  In conventional society, power is often associated with money so with Pluto being the planet of power, Jupiter expands Pluto = big power or big money.  If I use the whole sign house system used under Hellenistic Astrology, Jupiter Pluto in Buffett’s chart falls into the eighth house which is the house often associated with investments or other people’s money.  His company Berkshire Hathaway is the vehicle he uses to invest for himself/others, buying Berkshire is synonymous with investing in a fund manager.  With the modern astrology system however, the two planets fall into Buffett’s seventh house, the house of partnerships.  I find people with Jupiter in a strong sign (his Jupiter is in Cancer which is its exalted position, basically a strong position) in the seventh house are never short of attracting auspicious partners (both in business or romance).  Buffett surely has had that experience, his late partner Mr Charlie Munger was also a fabulous investor with whom he worked side-by-side for many decades until his passing in 2023.

One of the key differences in the charts of Buffett and Soros are their different Sun signs and their aspects with other planets.  (As Soros’ birthtime is unknown, I cannot make any worthwhile or quality remarks about his planets’ house positions and therefore I will stick strictly to comparing zodiac signs and aspects between planets).

Buffett’s Sun is in Virgo and has an aspect to Neptune and Saturn.  Saturn is the planet that rules time, it is about long-term commitment; which already says a lot about how he approaches his investments and even how he uses money (Saturnians are usually very frugal!).  His Saturn is in rulership (its own sign) which says a lot about how “well” he can use this Saturn, often implying that the good traits of Saturn can manifest easily in his chart – the productivity of Saturn, the commitment of Saturn, the discipline of Saturn.  In fact I would say that Buffett’s impeccable and unmatched discipline is probably one of the biggest success factors for him.  Who honestly can have the discipline to “hold” an investment regardless of all the noise and craziness that our world constantly rides through?  Thanks partly to his Saturn Capricorn!

His Sun is also joined by Neptune in trine to Saturn; interesting how his investment holding horizon is “forever”.  If Saturn represents time, Neptune in aspect to Saturn dissolves time (Neptune is timeless!) – how appropriate that this is his investment philosophy.  Neptune also idealizes whatever it touches, his idealization and obsession is with the power of time (Saturn) is unmatched and fully expressed in the way he invests for sure.  I wish I have this aspect in my chart =)!

On the other hand, Soros is much more focused on macro and geopolitical trends and being a hedge fund manager, he uses his sense of such trends to position himself for various speculative moves in the markets.  Soros is born under the Sun sign of Leo, the sign that is associated with risk-taking and speculation.  Soros also has a Sun Uranus aspect which contrasts starkly with Buffett’s Sun Neptune Saturn.  Uranus is revolutionary, is full of “surprise” (note his surprise and decisive moves during times of crisis).  One of Soros’ most famous move was the “breaking the Bank of England” trade in 1992 where he pocketed an enormous sum from shorting the British pound during a crisis situation; very expressive of “Uranus” indeed.

Uranus is also a very politically inclined and philanthropic / humanitarian energy as Soros was known for having donated a huge sum of his wealth through his Open Society Foundations that focus on promoting democracy, education, human rights, and social justice globally.

Another stark difference in their chart is the sign of their Mars.  Soros has his Mars in Gemini (I’ve always feel that “traders” need some Gemini in their charts because you need to be able to adapt and change quickly when “winds” of fortunes change which is the constant of markets.  On the other hand, Buffett has Mars in Cancer, not exactly a strong Mars, this Mars is not so action-oriented but rather takes a more passive approach.  There’s also an attachment to things with historical value – once again, very indicative of his investment philosophy.

Sometimes, a small difference in planetary position can yield starkly different propensities, styles and in the end, life paths too.  In learning metaphysics with my Chinese teachers, there’s a popular saying – “One’s character creates destiny”.   I find this to be so true indeed.
